You love your children. You want them to be safe and healthy.
Then why are we exposing your family to dangerous emissions at the rink?
Unknowingly, families, skaters, spectators, and employees are exposed to dangerous emissions when they enter many ice rinks across North America. The two most common emissions are Carbon Monoxide and Nitrogen Dioxide.
What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon Monoxide is produced by the combustion of the fossil fuels. It is an odorless, tasteless and poisonous gas that is lighter than air. It is highly toxic and can cause headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, and death. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), more than 500 people die each year from Carbon Monoxide poisoning in the USA.
What is Nitrogen Dioxide?
Nitrogen Dioxide is produced primarily as a byproduct of high-temperature combustion. It causes eye, nose, and throat irritation, and may cause impaired lung function and increased respiratory infections in young children. Increased levels of Nitrogen Dioxide can have a significant impact on people with asthma causing more frequent and intense attacks. Children with asthma and seniors with heart disease are most at risk.
What Creates Carbon Monoxide and Nitrogen Dioxide in Our Rinks?
The biggest offenders are fossil fuel powered Ice Resurfacers and Edgers. It is the combustion of these fossil fuels that create these emissions. By removing the fossil fuel units, the Carbon Monoxide and Nitrogen Dioxide levels in a rink would decrease drastically, creating a safer and healthier environment for our families.
